Course of the Test Session

Updated

The tests of the Matriculation Examination are conducted digitally. Read these instructions carefully when preparing for the Matriculation Examination.

Preparing for a test

You have access to a computer that you will use to complete the test.

The Matriculation Examination is mainly taken using a wired examination network. You know how to connect a network cable (Ethernet cable) to your computer, either directly or with an adapter. The Abitti candidate application is installed on your computer in advance.

You have headphones. You have tested that the headphones work with your computer.

Bring an identity document (e.g. a passport or a driving licence) to the test, as well as your computer with its power cable, headphones and a pen. If you do not have an identity document, check with your school whether they have other instructions for verifying your identity during the test session. You may also bring food with you if you wish.

Check the exam room and the start time of the test. Also find out about any other school-specific practices related to the test (e.g. whether computers must be taken to the exam room in advance).

Before the test

Leave your bag, phone and other belongings outside the exam room. In the exam room, go to the seat assigned by the invigilators.

Connect the network cable, power cable and headphones to your computer.

Place your identity document on the desk where the invigilator can easily see it.

Check that you have been given draft paper stamped or printed with the name and number of the general upper secondary school. Write your candidate number, signature and printed name on all draft papers you use.

Switch on your computer when instructed to do so by the invigilators.

Complete the sound test, which starts automatically. If you cannot hear any sound, raise your hand and call an invigilator.

Enter your first name, surname and personal identity code into the test system. Select the correct test in the correct language. Read and accept the terms of use of the test system. Wait for the invigilator to confirm your login.

The test begins when the invigilator starts it from the exam room server.

During the test

The test tasks are displayed in the browser window. Any background materials related to the questions will open from links in the test in a separate tab. You can switch between the materials and the test tabs. If necessary, you can adjust the volume during the test using the headphone icon at the top of the screen.

Enter your answers directly in the answer fields next to the questions. The test system saves your responses in the answer fields automatically. You may take notes and draft your answers using the programmes and applications in the system or on paper during the test. Save any files you create with the programmes and applications regularly to ensure they are backed up to the server.

To prevent cheating, the invigilator may instruct you to reduce the size of the font, images or other markings in the windows containing your answers. Failure to comply with this instruction, or increasing the size of the font or other markings again during the same test, may be considered an attempt to cheat. The invigilator may not instruct you to reduce the size of the font or other markings in the answer windows if you have been granted special arrangements allowing you to enlarge the font size.

Immediately raise your hand and call an invigilator if

  • you notice that you are taking the wrong test
  • you cannot hear any sound through your headphones
  • you were unable to hear an audio recording in a listening comprehension task due to a disturbance
  • the system indicates that the network connection has been lost and it does not return immediately
  • your computer stops working or you encounter other problems or disruptions
  • Even if your computer has to be restarted or replaced due to a problem, you can continue your test from where you left off

In language tests, the audio recordings for listening comprehension tasks can be played only once or twice. After you have used the permitted number of listening attempts, you can no longer play the recording. If you were unable to hear the recording due to a disturbance, raise your hand and call an invigilator immediately. After investigating the issue, the invigilator may allow you to replay the most recently played recording.

If you leave your seat during the test, for example to use the toilet, activate the screen saver by clicking the lock icon at the top of the screen.

Ending the test

Read the instructions once more and check that you have answered all the required questions.

Make sure that the answer fields for any questions you do not wish to answer are completely empty.

End the test by clicking the End test button at the bottom of the task page.

After ending the test, switch off your computer using the power icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

Return the draft papers to the invigilator.

Take your computer and headphones with you, or leave them in the exam room to be collected later in accordance with your school’s instructions.
