Can I cancel my enrolment for matriculation examination tests?

You may cancel your enrolment by submitting a written notice to the principal of your school up to the enrolment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, you may apply to the Matriculation Examination Board to have your enrolment for a test that forms part of the examination, or for a separate test, declared void if there is an exceptionally compelling reason for doing so. The Board considers compelling reasons to include, for example, illness, studying or working abroad, or a significant obstacle arising from military service.

The application must be prepared together with the principal of the general upper secondary school. Documentary evidence of the obstacle must be attached to the application. However, applications based on a sudden illness or another exceptionally compelling reason do not require a medical certificate or other healthcare documentation. Evidence must also be provided of studies or employment abroad during the tests, or that a conscript has not been granted leave to participate in the examination.

Studying or working in Finland, or military service on its own, is not considered sufficient grounds for having an enrolment declared void.

Having an enrolment declared void does not extend the time limit for completing the Matriculation Examination. The examination must therefore still be completed within a maximum of three consecutive examination rounds.

Can I change my enrolment details?

The Matriculation Examination Board may, for exceptionally compelling reasons, approve a change to enrolment details if it can be demonstrated that an error occurred during enrolment. The application must include the candidate’s enrolment form, or a copy of it, as well as a statement from the principal concerning the matter.

Can I enrol for the Matriculation Examination after the enrolment deadline?

Candidates must enrol for tests in writing by the deadline specified by the Matriculation Examination Board. The Board may accept a late enrolment if there are exceptionally compelling grounds for doing so. Candidates should first discuss the matter with the principal of their school, after which the principal may submit an application to the Board on the candidate’s behalf.

The application must explain why the candidate did not enrol by the deadline and why it is important for them to be allowed to sit the tests in that examination round. The grounds given must include an illness or another exceptionally compelling reason. The application must be accompanied by a statement from the school indicating whether the school supports the candidate’s application, together with any other supporting grounds where necessary.

How are grade boundaries and grades set?

How can I tell whether circumstances that adversely affect test performance or a disruption during the test were taken into account in the assessment?

An illness or disability, dyslexia, or exceptionally difficult life circumstances may be taken into account in the assessment only if you would otherwise receive a failing grade in the test. Any score adjustment may not exceed the minimum score required for the grade Approbatur. No score adjustment is available on the grounds of foreign language background. The score shown on the results list may be higher if a circumstance that adversely affected your test performance or a disruption during the test was taken into account in the assessment.
